Helping Faith-Based Partners Go Solar to Support Their Neighbors

Edwards Church is housed on top of a small hill in Framingham, Massachusetts. The wooden church, originally constructed in 1827 by the Saxonville Religious Society, has long served as a place for the congregation to worship and as a community hall for members to gather. Institutions like Edwards Church are often important pieces of a community, offering safe spaces to foster relationships, religious connections, and sanctuary to those who need it.

One of the guiding values of the church and its congregation is: “We are people who long to make a positive difference in the world.” The team behind Edwards Church lives up to this value in many ways. Putting solar on top of the church and other buildings on the property is one of them.

Our project with Edwards Church helps the congregation get closer to achieving their goal of net-zero emissions. Sunwealth partnered with Framingham, MA-based Team Solar and Warwick, RI-based installer Rooftop Power to bring 89 kW of solar to the rooftop of the church. The congregation will receive a lease payment for hosting the project, which will be a low-income community shared solar project, and will deliver an estimated $120,000 in lease revenue over project’s lifetime. Energy generated will be allocated to a local nonprofit and two low-income households, providing them with a combined $204,000 in lifetime energy savings, while reducing over 1,900 metric tons of carbon emissions, and creating three lifetime solar job years.

For our faith-based partners, going solar not only enables them to save money on their electricity bill, but it also contributes to the economic and environmental well-being of their surrounding community.
